Javaunie Walters
Javaunie Walters, the first male in his family to attend college, is an expert juggler, balancing full-time course work with a full-time job.
Walters admits, 鈥淚t is challenging, but I just do it.鈥 The economics major chose Towson University for its affordability and strong reputation among his peers and the business community. Still, he was unsure how to combine his interests in business and economics. 鈥淭he study of economics draws on both those areas, and it has made my life more efficient and more organized,鈥 explains Walters. 鈥淚 use economics every day personally and professionally.鈥
Walters attributes his expanding economic knowledge to a stellar Department of Economics faculty, including Economics Chair and Associate Professor Matthew Chambers, a recent Outstanding Teaching Award winner. 鈥淔aculty members are incredibly smart, and they always have their doors open,鈥 says Walters. With free time at a minimum, Walters has attended the TU Real Estate Club to network with successful real estate professionals and learn how to bring 鈥渆conomics鈥 thinking to the real estate field.
He has also helped mentor others through the Student Academic and Career Services office in the College of Business and Economics. 鈥淎s a student consultant in the office, I鈥檝e helped students create resumes, find and apply for internships and answer general questions,鈥 says Walters. He has participated on panels for incoming students, contributed to a weekly newsletter for career advice and interviewed student consultants. In addition, Walters can take credit for helping to raise the profile of the office by using social media to reach more students.
