Regular and contingent II faculty, staff and lecturers are eligible for annual, holiday, personal and sick leave. Please review the leave summaries below for specific information based on employee classification. Subject to leave policies, eligible employees may be able to utilize other types of leave, including administrative leave and family and medical leave.

Family & Medical Leave (FMLA)

Eligible employees may take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave during a 12-month period as outlined in the FMLA policy.

Parental Leave

Eligible employees may utilize parental leave surrounding the birth or adoption of a child. When qualified, FMLA runs concurrent with parental leave.

Workers' Compensation/Accident Leave may be available to employees who suffer a work-related illness or injury.

Bereavement Leave

In the unfortunate event of the death of a close relative, employees may use up to three (3) days of their own accrued sick and safe leave. If the death of a close relative requires an employee to travel, requiring an overnight stay, up to a maximum of five (5) days of their own accrued sick and safe leave may be used.

Sick Leave

An employee who sustains a temporary recoverable illness or injury and has exhausted all other forms of accrued leave may be eligible for additional forms of sick leave as described in the sick and safe leave policy.  All requests for additional forms of sick leave are subject to review and approval by the Office of Human Resources.

Contingent I hourly employees and certain student employees are eligible for sick and safe leave in accordance with the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act. The use of sick and safe leave is dependent upon available balance, and the corresponding leave code must be entered on the timesheet by the supervisor.

Compensatory Leave (Comp Time)

Regular non-exempt staff may be eligible for comp time with supervisor approval and completion of the required agreement.

Community Service Leave

Towson University and the USM seek to encourage employees to offer their time and talents to benefit our citizens through community service. Details are outlined below.

Administrative Leave

If necessary, the university may authorize the use of administrative leave in the event of an emergency or inclement weather.

  • ACUSE β€” Accident Leave
    If you sustain an accidental injury while at work, you may be eligible for accident leave. Documentation is required.
  • ADMU β€” Admin Leave
    The president or designee may authorize use of administrative leave for inclement weather, emergencies, or other purposes.
  • ALUSE β€” Annual Leave Used
    Annual leave can be used with supervisor approval.
  • COMSV β€” Community Service Leave
    Up to 8 hours of leave (pro-rated for part-time) may be used in a calendar year for qualifying volunteer activities. Documentation is required.
  • FMLA β€” Family & Medical Leave Unpaid
    Up to 12 weeks of leave may be used in a 12-month period for either you or an eligible family member's serious health condition.  Documenation is required.  Code FMLA is used after all accrued leave is exhausted and the remaining Family and Medical Leave is unpaid.
  • FOPLV β€” FOP Meeting Leave - Police Officers Only
    Leave for regular University Police FOP meetings. Documentation is required.
  • HEMU β€” Hemopherisis Donation
    Up to 4 hours can be taken for donation.
  • HLUSE β€” Holiday Leave Used
    Up to 14 days (15 in an election year) are granted each "calendar year".
  • INTRV β€” USM Int/Exam Leave
    You may be granted up to 4 hours of paid excused time for an interview with a USM institution. Documentation is required.

    Paid leave while on jury duty. Documentation is required.
  • LEGLU β€” Legal Action Leave
    Paid leave if summoned to appear in a court action. Documentation is required.
  • LWOPU β€” Leave Without Pay
    Leave of absence without pay. Typically, used after all available leave has been exhausted. Documentation is required.
  • MLTRYβ€” Military Leave
    Up to 15 days may be granted in a calendar year for military training. Documentation is required.
  • PARLV β€” Parental Leave
    Available after completion of six months of employment.  Consult policy for details.
  • PLUSE β€” Personal Leave
    Up to 3 days are granted each "calendar year".
  • SLADP β€” Sick Leave used for Birth/Adop
    Leave from an employee's sick leave balance may be used to care for a child immediatley after the adoption or birth.  Documentation is required
  • SLADV β€” Sick Leave Advanced
    Up to 60 days of sick leave may be granted for an employee's own medical condition after all available leave has been used. Medical documentation and prior approval required.
  • SLBERβ€” Sick Bereavement
    Accrued sick leave may be used - Up to 3 days for the death of an employee's immediate family member and 1 day for other eligible family members.  Up to 5 days may be used for an employee's immediate family member if overnight travel is required.
  • SLEXT β€” Sick Leave Extended
    Up to 12 months of sick leave may be granted for an employee's own medical condition beyond advanced sick leave. Medical documentation and prior approval required.
  • SLFAM β€” Sick Leave used for Family
    Used for an immediate family member's medical condition.
  • SLRES β€” USM Sick Leave Reserve used
    Available after one year of service. One day for each month of service may be granted from the fund for an employee's own medical condition after all available leaves have been used. Medical documentation and prior approval required.
  • SLUSE β€” Sick Leave Employee
    Used for an employee's own medical condition.
  • SUSNO β€” Suspension Without Pay
    Unpaid leave while on suspension. Documentation is required.

    Paid leave while on suspension. Documentation is required.

    Administrative leave for only those who work (usually Facilities and Police) when TU is closed due to an emergency.  Documentation is required.

  • ALUSE β€” Annual Leave Used
    Annual leave can be used with supervisor approval.
  • CMPUS β€” Comp Leave Used
    Time and half compensatory hours earned, for prior hours over 40.0 in a pay week, to be used by Regular Non-Exempt employees.
  • COMSV β€” Community Service Leave
    Up to 8 hours of leave (pro-rated for part-time) may be used in a calendar year for qualifying volunteer activities. Documentation is required.
